In this chapter you will learn geography and the landscape that China is home to.
Today China has 22 provinces. The population of the people in china is 1.357 billion people. l The population takes up about 22% of the world. To the North there is the border of Mongolia. To the West there is the middle east. To the south there is South East Asia. To the East there is the Pacific Ocean, Japan and Korea.
China's population during Ancient China such as during the Han Dynasty (about 206 BCE to 220 CE) was much smaller but still many people lived there. The population during the Han Dynasty was around 57,671,000.
China's neighboring countries were Xinjiang (now claimed as a Province) Tibet (also now claimed) to the West, Amman to the South (which is present SE Asia), and the Pacific ocean to the East. To the North was Ancient Mongolia.
The Great Wall of China was a major political boundary separating China and Mongolia. Its construction spanned many dynasties. For example, during the Han Dynasty as shown on this map, The Great Wall was at the Northern border and protected China from the Mongolian and Manchurian invaders.
There are many different sections of the Great Wall built by different dynasties over many centuries. In total all the sections cover 13,670 miles long. The Great Wall is the longest structure ever built by humans.
Materials used changed over the centuries including stone, brick and wood. The widest parts of the wall are 30 feet wide. The tallest parts of the wall are 26 feet tall.
